Perspective on Excellence

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

It’s easy to wonder what makes a person excellent, great, or successful. We see it everyday in the news and media. Whether it’s sports, business, or politics; we are constantly bombarded by how excellent a person or thing may be. Because of this, we also only see an end result; not the actual process. We very seldom see, or even hear about the struggles that were untaken to achieve said level of excellence. That’s exactly why this quote, this piece of perspective; is so important to remember…because excellence is not something that is achieved over night.

When it comes to training and athletic development, it’s no different. The most powerful thing a person can do when it comes to their training is to be consistent.

Now I will say…just because you show up and train, does not mean that you will achieve excellence, or whatever end goal you may have . Consistently executing your system is step one and then analyzing, questioning, and adapting your system is what truly allows for you to grow and take the next step in your physical development. Granted…this is the purpose of the Strength & Conditioning Coach and Sport Scientist; but there is still a very important piece to subjective feedback and self-regulation from the athlete. Technology and education have come a long way, but we still cannot completely understand what an individual is going through because we are simply not them.

This is exactly why I love my job as a Strength & Conditioning Coach. It is my purpose to do everything that I can to put the athlete in the best position to succeed. Excellence starts with the a habit, a habit of showing up consistently and executing your process. It then grows with the relationship of the Coach and Athlete as they mold the process to fit the specific individual needs.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope this provides some helpful perspective!
